Gwen is an Educational Technologist and Instructional Coach. She has extensive experience in classroom teaching, technology implementation, curriculum design and revision, professional development, and teacher coaching. She was able to benefit from the unique experience of working in several districts in the state of NJ as a long-term substitute and classroom teacher. In this experience she was able to see a diverse set of approaches to the implementation of the Common Core, standards-based instruction, educational technologies and digital assessment tools, and observed how each approach worked to impact the staff, students, and school as a whole. As she moved from school to school, her experiences helped to forge a holistic perspective for how teachers could best be supported to engender a motivated community, committed to a shared vision for student learning and success.
In 2016, she served as a representative of her school and grade-level on a district-wide committee and participated in the revision and restructuring of the English Language Arts curriculum. Her involvement primarily focused on developing common assessments and selecting appropriate supplemental resources such as adaptive learning programs and games that fostered personalized learning and growth. She aided in the development of a scope and sequence for a district-wide curriculum plan, designed to support readiness for 8th graders transitioning into high school, and the design of quarterly common assessments that worked to close the student achievement gap. Her technology implementation plans for mastery-style learning were later adopted in grades K-12, and she worked to support this through instructional coaching and participation in professional learning communities.
She left teaching in 2016 in order to pursue her Master's degree, as she felt that there was a significant need for instructional coaches who could provide compassionate support and guidance for teachers, as well as purposeful and effective professional development opportunities that teachers could apply immediately to support authentic learning. In 2017, she graduated from NJCU with an MA in Educational Technology & Educational Leadership. In this program, she received training in strategic planning, implementation of instructional technology, content authoring, graphic design, web design, professional development, teacher evaluation, and curriculum design.
In 2017, she has been working in Philadelphia for Springboard IT (formerly Springboard Media) as the Technology Learning Coordinator. In this role, she worked to support businesses and schools in the Greater Philadelphia area, training end-users to leverage available technologies to enhance their productivity and workflows. For select Education clients, she served as an acting Technology Coordinator, Instructional Coach, and provided monthly consultation services for their strategic planning and curriculum development. As Springboard IT is an Apple and Google partner, Gwen received certifications from both companies as a trainer or certified educator.
She founded Spark Education Solutions in 2018 in order to focus her energies specifically on supporting teachers and educational institutions through professional development, instructional coaching, and educational technology consultation. After starting SparkEd, Gwen joined the Educational Technology team at the School District of Philadelphia. There, she works as a Technology Integration Coach, supporting teachers in high schools throughout the district with technology integration strategy, instructional coaching, and professional development. She has also supported the digital literacy curriculum revision and alignment project and works with trainers from SMART and Apple to ensure that all teachers are developing relevant competencies and skill sets to support all learner types.
